Raphael's Artist Panels

Artist's Panels manufactured at Raphael's start with either 1/8" Thick MDF or our revolutionary 3/8" Thick Ultralight LDF. If you are not familiar with this product, it is a distant cousin to the standard MDF that has been used to make panels for many years. The primary difference is that LDF has a density that is over 30% less than standard MDF which enables us to make some of our panels out of a thicker material that is more rigid and less prone to warpage while maintaining a weight that is the same or less than standard 1/4" thick MDF or Masonite. This is especially good in panels larger than 18" x 24" where warping can become an issue. All of our panels are first cut to size, then double primed with a high build Acrylic Titanium coating and lightly sanded between coats to ensure a smooth consistent finish that is perfect to receive your paint as is or to adhere to one of our many artist canvases. We also offer an Acrylic Gessoe coating on any of our panels for a slight additional charge.

Standard Panel Styles

• First, the 1/8" MDF Thin Line Panel or the 3/8" LDF Panel. Both receive 2 coats of a high build acrylic primer and are sanded smooth, ready to be painted on as is or to receive your favorite canvas. These are also available with an acrylic gessoe coating for a slight additional charge.

• Second - the Canvas Covered Panel - either style of the primed panels above are covered with any of our 6 primed canvases and trimmed even at the outside edge. Contact us for samples of the canvases available.

• Third - the Raphael's Cradled Panel - this is our improved version of the traditional Cradled Panel where Basswood lifters are glued around the perimeter on the back of a primed 1/8" MDF or 3/8" Ultralight panel so the painting surface is "raised" to a height of 7/8", 1-1/4" or 1-1/2". The panels are sanded smooth and primed on ALL surfaces. Cradled Panels are available Primed, Gessoed or Wrapped with your choice of canvas where the canvas is glued to the surface and wrapped around the sides and onto the back of the lifters.

• Fourth - the Raphael's Box Panel - unique to Raphael's, the Box Panel is similar to the Cradled Style except the lifter is made from Ultralight strips in various thicknesses that are cut on a 45 degree bevel on the inside so they can be used as a hanging cleat once the artwork is complete. Just mount the included wall cleat to the display wall surface and slide the cleated Box Panel in place. These are available in thicknesses of 3/4", 1", 1-1/8", 1-3/8" and 1-1/2". When covered with one our fabrics used in framing, these make a great display surface for floating your artwork.
